This morning I had a lot of verses in my sermon.
So, if you were trying to write them all down, but could not, below are the notes.
SERMON NOTES FROM MAY 10, 2009:
Two Admonitions Regarding Faith – Galatians 5:1-15
1.) If salvation is by works and not the Gospel, then you have been severed from Christ and have fallen away from Grace. (v. 2-4, 7-12)
Texts showing you cannot lose your salvation:
· John 6:37 – All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
· John 10:28 – I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
· Philippians 1:6 – And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
· 1 Peter 1:3b-4 – According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
· Romans 8:29-30 – 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
· Ephesians 1:13-14 – “you also…were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance…”
· 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 – 21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee
What about those who walk away?
· 1 John 2:19 – 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
Conclude:
· 2 Peter 1:10-11 – 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
2.) So, real faith shows itself by showing outward demonstrations of love to your neighbor. (v. 5, 6, 13, 14)
· 1 John 4:7-8 – 7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
· Matthew 22:37-39 – 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
· James 1:22 – But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves
· Galatians 5:22-23 – 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law
· Ephesians 2:10 - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
· Matthew 7:17-20 – 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
· 1 Corinthians 13:3 – If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
· Colossians 3:1-2 – 1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
