Our mission at Remedy Church is to build a biblical community in our city, so together, we can know, see, love, serve and glorify Jesus Christ. This mission, though it includes the city of Rock Hill, does not exclude other places around the world. When we see the devastation that has happened in the country of Haiti, our hearts should be broken. We should weep for the ones who have perished and for those whom God, in His mercy, has kept alive.
We should weep for those who have perished because some of those in the earthquake had not yet trusted Jesus as their Lord as Savior. Their sin was not forgiven, they didn’t worship Jesus, they are in eternity separated from Jesus in hell. We should be overcome with emotions when we think of their premature death. (premature from our perspective).
We should weep for those who are still alive because they have lost loved ones, because they are sleeping in the street for fear of another earthquake happening and fearing their house will fall in on them, because they have little food and water, because some of their churches have crumbled and they have no place to worship on Sunday, because small girls are being sold into sexual slavery, because we anxiously desire for the Gospel to be proclaimed loudly and clearly in the midst of this tragedy.
Not only should our hearts be broken, but we should be moved to action. This is one of the greatest of Christian virtues…action. Let us not find ourselves broken over these people without action accompanying our tears.
Here is what action could look like:
1. Prayer. You should still find yourself praying for their salvation. You can pray for them to have food, water and medicine. You can pray for their safety. You can pray for those who are still trapped by rubble to be found and freed. You can pray for families to locate lost loved ones. There are so many things you can pray for…
2. Giving. This Sunday at Remedy Church we will take up a special offering for Haiti. I am asking that all who will be at church this Sunday will come ready to give above and beyond your normal giving and bring a special offering for helping the people of Haiti. I want you to give sacrificially. I am asking that you consider an amount that would be very costly to yourself and very sacrificial. This amount should be prayed about. This is a chance for you to really step out on faith and let God stretch you. Perhaps you should fast a meal or two this week for the money. Perhaps you should not eat out at all next week in order to give this money. Perhaps you should not go to Starbucks this month as a sacrifice for the people of Haiti. This is a time to step out of our comfortable, easy life in America, and make sure IN OUR HEART that Christ is all we need, not money. I am asking that we give boldly this weekend.
The money will be donated to churcheshelpingchurches.com. This is an organization that has just been formed for the rebuilding effort in Haiti, with an emphasis on churches. The goal is that we can do all we can (financially) to make sure as the rebuild this country that THE GOSPEL is also being proclaimed boldly by the churches there.
Let’s come on Sunday ready to see God really stretch us. See you Sunday.
