Word
Colossians 3:16 – “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
This verse is packed with so many challenging and applicable things and we need to hear every one of them.
The first and most importantly obvious thing Paul is stressing to the Colossians is the absolute necessity of the Word of God in a Christian’s life. Without it we are lost, having no truth or hope or encouragement on which to stand. Richly it should be dwelling in us. We should crave it, constantly be consumed by it, and allow it’s life and truth to move in us and convict our hearts. More than we know popular culture or lyrics to any song we should KNOW the Bible. In the end, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” – Luke 21:33. Where are you investing your time, knowledge, passion and meditation? I plead with you to invest in things eternal. Let the truths found in the Bible consume you.
Second thing: use the Word to teach and encourage others. Shed light or correct sin in someone’s life. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works” – Hebrews 10:24.
I love his third encouragement probably because I am a worship leader. Let us sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Always have a song of praise in your heart because you have been saved! We have every reason in the world to make melody and be glad. We are redeemed! So in your hearts praise him, sing to him, and declare him Savior and Lord.
The fourth is a challenge. As we rest in the sovereignty of our God over all things and every circumstance we look to trust him always and give thanks to him for every trial and every good thing that comes our way. It is all working together for our good (Romans 8:28) and foe his endless glory. This is a beautiful thing. He is sovereign over all our days and loving in all of His ways. Trust him always.
